1. Measure your space
Note the approximate square footage of the room(s) you want to cool and heat.
2. Use the BTU chart below
Find the BTU range that matches your space and conditions.
3. Pick your setup
Decide if you need a single-room, multi-room, or whole-home system.
BTU & Room Size Guide
If your space has lots of windows, poor insulation, or extreme heat or cold, choose the next BTU size up.
Approximate Room Size vs Recommended BTU
| Room Size (Approx.) | Recommended BTU Capacity |
|---|---|
| Up to 250 sq. ft | 9,000 BTU |
| 250–400 sq. ft | 12,000 BTU |
| 400–600 sq. ft | 18,000 BTU |
| 600–1,000 sq. ft | 24,000 BTU |
| 1,000–1,500 sq. ft | 30,000 BTU |
| 1,500–2,000 sq. ft | 36,000 BTU |
Tip:
- Hot climates, large windows, or poor insulation? Size up.
- Cool climates, well-insulated space? You may be fine with the lower end of the range.
Choose the Setup That Matches Your Home

- Individual control in each room
- Cleaner exterior look with one outdoor unit
Best fit: MRCOOL® DIY multi-zone systems.

Home With Ducts
Whole-Home Comfort With Existing Ductwork
If your home already has ductwork and you want to replace or upgrade an older central system, MRCOOL® offers powerful Universal and Central Ducted options.
- Ideal for: whole-home comfort through existing ducts
- Pairs well with existing ductwork and vents
- Designed for serious, all-season performance
Best fit: MRCOOL® Universal or Central Ducted systems.
Power & Voltage: What You Need to Know
Before you finalize your system, it’s important to check your available power where the condenser will be installed.
- Many smaller systems run on 115V, which is common in standard household outlets.
- Larger BTU systems often require 230V and a dedicated breaker.
- Your home’s electrical panel or a licensed electrician can confirm what you have available.
Note: If you’re not sure, don’t guess. Take a clear photo of your electrical panel and send it to support@coolheatdirect.com. We can help you decide which MRCOOL® DIY systems are compatible.

With multi-zone systems, you choose your number of zones upfront. If you think you might want extra zones later, look at a system with more capacity than you need right now, or consider a second single-zone system for future expansion.
